Gallery & Visitor Services Coordinator

The Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library seeks a Gallery & Visitor Services Coordinator who will help us create a welcoming and engaging experience for visitors. This role is central to the day-to-day life of the Center, ensuring our exhibition spaces run smoothly while helping connect audiences to our work. The staff member in this role will combine strong organizational skills with initiative and curiosity, balancing gallery operations with opportunities to support and shape public programs and visitor engagement.

Key responsibilities

Gallery Operations

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Leventhal Center’s gallery and public spaces to support a positive visitor experience, including scheduling and staffing the visitor information desk

  • Develop opportunities for visitor engagement for a diverse public audience (both Boston locals and visitors to the area), while anticipating and responding to the needs of these audiences

  • Maintain clear scheduling and communication systems for all Leventhal Center staff, including part-time gallery attendants

  • Respond professionally and clearly to questions and requests from visitors in person, by email, and through other communication channels

  • Maintain gallery supplies and interpretative materials to ensure exhibitions remain welcoming, organized, and accessible to visitors

  • Identify and implement opportunities for dynamic connections between visitors and the Leventhal Center mission

  • Supervise co-op or other part time staff with a focus on continuous, professional, and welcoming visitor experiences in the Leventhal Center gallery

Public Programs

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of adult public programs including tours, lectures, and events connected to exhibitions and the Leventhal Center's broader mission

  • Coordinate program logistics including communication with speakers and event participants, scheduling AV and facilities support, and other event needs

  • Provide day-of event coordination and support to ensure programs run smoothly for speakers, staff, and attendees

Audience Engagement

  • Assist with the development and delivery of an engaging social media presence for the Leventhal Center with a clear and welcoming public voice

  • Identify opportunities and contribute ideas for connecting new audiences to the Leventhal Center

  • Create opportunities for structured and semi-structured adult group interactions with Leventhal Center gallery and learning spaces

Operational Coordination

  • Work closely with colleagues across the Leventhal Center to support exhibitions, programs, and visitor engagement initiatives

  • Provide organizational and administrative support that helps the Center’s public-facing work run effectively

  • Take initiative on projects and contribute to a collaborative, mission-driven team environment

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelors degree preferred, or equivalent professional experience

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities with a strong attention to detail

  • Excellent communication skills and comfort interacting with a wide range of audiences

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to develop clear systems for managing schedules, information, and logistics

  • Demonstrated reliability and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small team

Compensation & Position Details

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position. The selected candidate will be expected to work in-person at the Central Library in Copley Square on Tuesdays to Saturdays. After an initial onboarding period, one day of remote work per week may become possible depending on supervisory approval and staffing needs.

The per annum wage for this position will range from $50,000–$60,000, depending on experience. The position is eligible for a full suite of health benefits, including medical and dental coverage, commuter benefits, employer contributions to a 401(k) retirement plan, and paid time off.

There is no City of Boston residency requirement for this position. Leventhal Map & Education Center employees report to the independent Leventhal Map & Education Center and are not covered directly by human resource policies pertaining to the Boston Public Library or City of Boston municipal employees.

This position is subject to a CORI background check.

Desired Start Date

Candidates must be able to begin work by May 1 or sooner. An earlier start date in early or mid-April may be possible if desired.

About the Leventhal Center

The Leventhal Map & Education Center is an independent, self-governing nonprofit organization in a long-term strategic relationship with the Boston Public Library. The Center stewards a quarter million geographic objects in the Library’s collections, and works to make them freely available to the public for research, interpretation, and engagement. Our collections range from fifteenth-century atlases to modern-day geospatial data sets. The Center creates original exhibitions hosted in its gallery space at the Central Library in Copley Square and promotes education on topics that explore the relationship between people and places.
