Repræsentatio Scenographica Arcis Cronenburg…

Samuel von Pufendorf
27 x 55 cm

This view shows Kronborg Castle, in Helsingør Denmark, which was immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. This castle is one of the most important renaissance castles in Northern Europe and dates back to the 1420s. The view of Kronborg in De rebus dated 1658 shows the castle under siege by Swedish forces led by Carl Gustaf Wrangel who was eventually successful in taking Kronberg. Once conserved, this view will appear in the exhibition “Shakespeare’s World” opening in the Leventhal Map Center Gallery in September 2016.
