About the Collection

The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center is an independent, nonprofit institution. It is the steward of the 200,000 maps and 5,000 atlases in the Boston Public Library collection and uses these cartographic treasures to provide engaging educational programs for K-12 students, teachers and for general audiences.

Hundreds of our maps and atlases are torn and stained and need to be restored to their former glory. Once stabilized, these treasures can be digitized for website viewing, exhibited, studied and enjoyed. Just as our maps have provided guidance for explorers, pioneers and travelers for hundreds of years, you can help chart the course for future generations.

Irreplaceable gems needing conservation include 17th and 18th century atlases, 19th century world maps, and maps from the American Revolutionary War Era.

You can help save these historically significant maps. Donate to Save A Map or make a gift in memory/in honor of a special person.

Thank you to all of our generous Save a Map donors.
