Suite du Neptune Francais, ou Atlas Nouveau des Cartes Marines (vols. 2 and 3)

Pieter Mortier
Amsterdam, 1693 and 1700

21 1/4” w x 24 3/4” h
43 charts and 32 plates of illustrations

This immense sea atlas is in two parts, bound into one volume. The charts in part two of the atlas, entitled Cartes marines à l’usage des armées du roy de la Grande Bretagne, are among the highlights of the Dutch cartography from the 17th century.

From our Boston perspective, these atlases offer a unique view into the important role that French culture played in the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when they were acquired by the library. Mortier’s Neptune François and Suite du Neptune François are atlases that represent the transition from the Dutch as the major mapmakers of the era, to the French becoming the major mapmakers.

This is an important addition to the Leventhal Map Center Maritime Charts and Atlases Collection of Distinction.
