Using and Requesting our Images
DOWNLOADING IMAGES FROM OUR WEBSITE
Maps are available for download directly from our website in two different sizes. Print Size is small and is applicable for use in a print document. Full Size is large and is for printing the document on a home printer.
We allow you to use our maps and images under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (Creative Commons License) license. This allows you to share and adapt the images for non-commercial purposes, under the agreement that others may do the same to your work. For more information read this page. Your attribution line must be as follows:
From the Leventhal Map Center’s collections:
“Map reproduction courtesy of the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library”
From a separate collection (example: Richard H. Brown Revolutionary War Era Maps):
“Map reproduction from the [NAME OF COLLECTION] collection of the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library”
To request a high resolution image you must contact the LMC.
USING IMAGES IN PUBLICATIONS OR COMMERCIALLY
When using our images in publications or commercially, you must contact the LMC. By doing so you agree to the following conditions:
- All images that are reproduced from the Leventhal Map Center’s collections will be credited as “Map reproduction courtesy of the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library.”
- Should the image(s) appear in a print publication, ONE copy will be sent to the Map Center.
- Should the image(s) be further reproduced for commercial profit, consent from the Leventhal Map Center is required.
- The Leventhal Map Center reserves the right to deny image requests due to copyright or other restrictions.
The Leventhal Map Center will review and process the request. On approval, you will receive a link to download a high resolution .tif file (300 dpi @ physical dimensions of the map).
